shit, so now insta isn't good for artists either? (looks great)

Hibachi responds:

Yes, for the most part, especially smaller artists. I don’t know the specifics, but take what I say with a grain of salt, but basically, Insta has now changed their algorithm where it is significantly much more difficult to organically grow. From past experiences, Insta has been following an algorithm where post engagement is what dictates if a post will be distributed further to more users such as followers or strangers. The algorithm before the change viewed engagement through likes and comments (other factors could include view time or sharing). So the more likes and comments, the more engagement you get, and the more people will see your post.

However from what I’ve been told by other users and experienced myself, the algorithm has changed to where saving, the feature to bookmark a post, now has the highest engagement value and with likes having the lowest engagement value (comments seem to help). This screws over a lot of small artists. So now instead of likes helping to gain traction, saving is what does it now. You only necessarily save a post if you’re only going to look at it later. So not only is saving a rare action, it basically makes artists hope that their work is worth even saving to even grow. This hurts smaller artists because they don’t have the kind of audience to help share their work or that most of their audience even knows that the algorithm changed. Likes are almost a negligible factor if an artist wants to grow an organic audience. So if you really want to succeed now, you just have to hope that a large account will shout you out, you buy promotional features, or you follow random trends.

So is insta shit for art? Unfortunately, yeah, when it comes to personally establishing yourself. However, not all hope is lost. Insta is still a good place to network with small artists, find niches you’re interested in, and help you understand the art community through a social media perspective. It’s still a good place to learn how to manage yourself online and market yourself as an artist to an open environment. Also, it’s a good place to quickly reference your art since insta is a very common social media platform with easy access visuals. Really don’t be discouraged to use it, but don’t use it in the hopes that you’ll easily succeed, use it just to post whatever you want under your own terms.

I hope this helps, and thank you for liking my work!
